Barb's SXSW Recap

After five years of wanting to go to South By Southwest, I finally made it this year, mainly due to my dear father's help buying me the plane ticket to Austin. Finances have been a bit rough for me the past few years as I was laid off for two of them and a part-time contractor for another two. But my Dad knew how much it would mean to me and offered to buy my airfare. This was my first time to the 512 and it's true what they say, Austin really is the "live music capital of the world!"

Before I start rambling off my day-to-day experiences, I just want to sum it all up with this: BEST WEEK EVER! *excluding my trips to Europe* I cannot express how phenomenal of a time I had every single day and how unbelievable of an experience this was. As a music lover, it's mind-blowing how much there is to see, how many bands are performing day and night, and the amount of venues that have something going on. I had no idea how much you could do without an official SXSW badge or wristband, nor did I understand the magnitude of area this festival spans. I had great intentions RSVP'ing to a bunch of parties through websites that my friends recommended, not realizing that I wouldn't be able to make 80% of them, partly because there's too many other things going on at the same time, and party due to the distance between venues. I may have only made it to five things I had originally scheduled for myself, but that's ok, I discovered so many other cool happenings instead!

Robin's SXSW Recap and Music Recommendations

(originally posted on robinmiller.us)

I love, LOVE Austin, “the music capital of the world!”

As you know, I attended SXSW for the second year in a row and had an amazing time. My best friend Elliot and I flew out to AUS for another week of live music in the heart of Texas. By the end of the trip my hamstrings were tight and the bottoms of my feet were black from walking around in sandals. I took home a bunch of swag, a killer new JanSport backpack, and most importantly new music! See my recommendations below at the end of this post.

The week started off on a good food note. Monday night we had sushi at Uchi, one of the best sushi restaurants I’ve ever eaten at. At 4.5 stars on Yelp, this place lived up to our expectations. Following dinner, we cruised over to Speakeasy to catch Wallpaper., one of my favorite performers out of Oakland, California. Read more about Wallpaper. in a recent article from The Huffington Post.
Tuesday night I discovered my new favorite band, The Lumineers from Denver, Colorado. The party was sponsored by DYN and featured an excellent lineup of bands in their outdoor venue.

After the party we had a dance session at Malaia (which I have continued to call Malaria since I never remember the name). The San Francisco dubstep DJ, Noah D, totally looked like Jessie Pinkman from afar and I couldn’t get over it. Even had to tweet it.

For the last two years of SXSW, El and I stop by The Driskill for the last night of Interactive. This is the place where everyone goes to recharge, hang out and mingle. This year we made some friends from Billboard, met one of their VJs and got schooled about Downtown Julie Brown. We also got VIP access to the following night’s Billboard Showcase with Lionel Richie at the ACL Live venue.

SXSW Schedule

I'm off to Austin on Tuesday for South By Southwest for the first time ever!  I am so excited and a little nervous because I know it will be a bit overwhelming, so I've set up a schedule with many overlapping events, which at least gives me some sort of plan. I've probably RSVP'ed to too many parties, but I figure it's better safe than sorry!  Stay tuned for a recap once I get back.

Save the date! Left Coast Live is Saturday, October 8!

In case you haven't heard yet, Left Coast Live is Saturday October 8th.  We've got a killer line up, including the The Limousines, The Postelles, Orgone, Chico Mann, Mara Hruby, Los Rakas, Benjamin Henderson and Friends, Hurricane Roses, and many more awesome acts.

There are 25+ bands performing this year on 3 outdoor stages and at neighboring partner venues.  The event is in downtown San Jose on Post Street between 1st St. and Market St.  Doors open at 3:30 PM, performances start at 4:00 PM and run through the night.  The event is open to all ages.

In addition to the live music, we are bringing back the Silent Disco - where folks dance in the street with headphones streaming the beats of DJs like Goldenchyld of the Bangerz.  The event is rounded out with a record swap, urban food zone and beer garden which will not disappoint.  More details are on our website at www.leftcoastlive.com

Can't wait to see you there!
