In case you haven't heard yet, Left Coast Live is Saturday October 8th. We've got a killer line up, including the The Limousines, The Postelles, Orgone, Chico Mann, Mara Hruby, Los Rakas, Benjamin Henderson and Friends, Hurricane Roses, and many more awesome acts.

There are 25+ bands performing this year on 3 outdoor stages and at neighboring partner venues. The event is in downtown San Jose on Post Street between 1st St. and Market St. Doors open at 3:30 PM, performances start at 4:00 PM and run through the night. The event is open to all ages.

In addition to the live music, we are bringing back the Silent Disco - where folks dance in the street with headphones streaming the beats of DJs like Goldenchyld of the Bangerz. Based in San Jose, CA, the purpose of this network is to unite the Bay Area Music scene and having bands work together instead of against each other to create a better "scene" in the Bay Area! There is so such amazing local talent that they want to showcase and build the local music and art community around it.

The Bay Area Music Industry Network welcomes all bands, musicians, artists, DJs, promoters, producers, recording studios, media, press, radio, venue owners, and entertainment-related companies to bring their demos and promo items to their events so they can network while enjoying great music and drinks!!

Outside Lands 2011 Review by Barb Rocks

Since I couldn't have afforded to go to Outside Lands without winning FREE 3-day passes, I really want to thank Dibbs once again! I encourage you all to check out their app that gives you cool local San Francisco events and information!

Let's start this wrap-up report by saying I HAD A BLAST all three days! Plus it was cool to experience each day with a different friend, each of which made the experience that much more enjoyable!

DAY 1:
Since I had to work part-time on Friday, I only got to the festival around 6pm, just in time to see The Limousines on the Panhandle Stage. Eric and Gio were rockin' a good size crowd and it was a great way to start off the Outside Lands experience. My good friend Naomi had never seen The Limos before, but she dug them right away and even recognized "Very Busy People" and "Internet Killed The Video Star." Due to the overwhelming size of the festival, we decided to walk around and get our bearings after The Limos set was done, so we checked out the Wine Lands and various food options; I also watched some people goof around in the Prius playground. At this point Phish had taken the stage at Lands End, so we got to enjoy their groovy tunes while eating our food -- I was determined to try to crispy mac and cheese, which was surprisingly good, while Naomi settled for a slice of pizza. Craving desserts, we made out way to ChocoLands and enjoyed the tasty bites of Mission Mini Cupcakes. Being that I had worked before coming, I was starting to feel a bit tired, so I never made it to see Erykah Badu (as I wanted), but we did finish the night off with a great set by The Shins! One act I really wish I could have seen was K-Flay, who I heard was fantastic from some fellow shuttle riders on the way back to the car.

DAY 2:
Jose, a high school friend, was the lucky person to join me on the second day. My plan was to get there at 2pm after running some necessary errands in the morning, but it turned out to be more like 3:30pm. Alas, I still caught the tail-end of OK Go's set! We made our way to the Panhandle stage to enjoy Christina Perri, who has a beautiful voice. Then it was back to Lands End for Arctic Monkeys, who really blew me away. I always knew who they were, but never realized how many of their songs I really love! Jose and I chilled on our blanket for their whole set, soaking in the rays, making friends with our neighbors, and drinking some beers. It was a beautiful day in SF and I treasured basking in the warm sun. I should also note that from the moment we arrived, the place was PACKED and I couldn't get my phone to do anything, not even send texts due to cellular overload. We stayed in the polo field for The Black Keys, but soon got a bit bored by their set. I know they are a talented band, but I've never really gotten into their vibe; plus two guys on stage are only so much fun to watch. Very curious about the Heineken Dome, which had the longest line to get in, we finally made our journey inside and LOVED IT! The surround sound, green lighting and no wait bar when you first walk-in just starts the experience off right. We grabbed an ice cold beer and ventured into the second dome where the DJ and dancing was. The place was packed, yet people made their way through, with stacks of tv screens and cool laser graphics striking your vision. David Harness was spinning and my body started moving to the electronic beats; I was completely entranced, my whole soul filled with joy; everyone around me seemingly in the same state, all swaying to the rhythm and beats with elated grins on our faces. I badly wanted to stay in this heavenly environment, but it was that time for Muse to hit the stage and the dome experience to end, so Jose and I made our way out. I grabbed a quick slice of pizza and we made our way into the crowd. I like having space to move and dance, so we only made it about halfway to the stage, but even though I couldn't see the stage that well, I decided not to dwell into the packed crowd more. Muse was still AMAZING from far away! I am a huge Muse fan, so I thoroughly enjoyed their set, singing along to the songs and watching the amazing lighting and laser effects. It was pure bliss with a full moon behind me! What a way to end Day 2!

DAY 3:
My roommate Laura (aka Pookie) was my lovely escort to the final day of Outside Lands, and as she put it, I saved the best for last! We arrived at 3pm, so sadly I missed Grouplove and Tune-yards (yes I know, I'm a dork for my late arrival). Since I hadn't made it to the Sutro stage the first two days, we journeyed over there and were introduced to the wonderful latin sounds of Julieta Venegas. We found a great spot in the shade on the hill and drank some beers during her set. It was a soothing way to spend the afternoon and get us in the mood. From there we worked our way around the festival, checking out the various attractions (Laura loved Juxtapoz outsider art), and meeting up with friends. We overheard some of John Fogerty's set, then settled in near the sound booth for The Decemberists, a band both Pookie and I adore. We sang and danced to their songs, both with happy smiles on our faces. Being dinner time, I finally got to enjoy a wonderful meal from Asqew Grill which included a chicken skewer, rice, and salad, and it was delicious! Then it was time to go to the Dome and show Pookie what an experience that was, which she definitely seemed to enjoy (Eric Sharp was DJing at that time). I was really bummed that Arcade Fire's set was at the same time as Deadmau5, as I love them, but having seen them twice before, I made the decision to finish my Outside Lands experience with Deadmau5, so we headed over to the Twin Peaks stage for his set. Talk about an unforgettable experience! Laura and I were so hypnotized by the music that we just danced, swayed, and hugged for the next hour and a half. I was a bit bummed that we weren't close enough to see his mouse head on stage, but the energy in the field made up for that. Surprisingly, Deadmau5 stopped early at 9:10pm (it was suppose to go til 9:30pm), so with disappointed faces we walked back to Lands End in hopes to catch the last 15 minutes of Arcade Fire's set, but sadly their set also ended early. Knowing that our day of musical euphoria was officially over, we made our way out of Golden Gate park and on our way home.

I am really impressed by Outside Lands and the whole experience. Another Planet Entertainment has put together an astonishing festival that is well organized and maintained. The refillable water program, the solar stage, the recycling/compost/trash bins, and the food & wine vendors were all stupendous. I am definitely looking forward to 2012!

Wente Vineyards BottleRockIt Music Festival

Good to see so many great music festivals in the Bay Area! Wente Vineyards in Livermore just announced BottleRockIt on September 10th! There's 23 bands playing on 3 stages at this all-day music fest sponsored by LIVE 105, with Music Director Aaron Axelsen guest DJing! Doors open at 10:30am and tickets are only $20 and can be purchased online.

Outside Lands Music Festival 2011: Robin + Ashley's Wrap Report

Outside Lands holds a special place in our heart, mainly because it’s in San Francisco. A music festival in Golden Gate Park sounds like an easy win, but it takes a LOT of work to put on a good festival. First, you’re up against nature. August in San Francisco will make non-locals dig at the bottom of their closets for boots, thick sweaters, heavy jackets and scarves. It’s freezing at night and often foggy during the day. The sun occasionally comes out. Second, you need a huge army of workers to combat all the tiny crevices in the park where people can sneak in. Security must be tight. Third, you need a killer lineup to attract music lovers. Outside Lands did a wonderful job checking off all of the above.

Highlights:

The Heinekan Dome! So much fun and dancing, though on occasion they’d let a few too many people in and it would be too crowded. It was one of the warmest places you could be that weekend.

Muse was fantastic live. It was crazy packed with fans of all ages. The light show was phenomenal. The energy of the crowd surpassed any I had seen that weekend.

Ellie Goulding, one of my favorite singers right now, was awesome at the Sutro Stage. She had an awesome group of fans who spelled out numerous things including G-O-U-L-D-I-N-G-A-T-O-R.

Other awesome acts: Girl Talk, !!!, Macklemore, The Roots, Major Lazer, and Arctic Monkeys.

The Sun Came Out! Saturday was nice and sunny for a few hours but Sunday was gorgeous all day!

The Fashion. There were plenty of furry hats out all weekend, but I must say I saw the most on Sunday.

Lowlights:

Friday night seemed way more crowded than any of the other days. It took forever to get from one end of the festival to the other – more so than usual. It could have been the poor shoe choice on my part or the freezing cold.

Big Boi didn’t even play? What the hell? At least we left before he was even supposed to go on. We had to save our energy for the rest of the weekend. Now I know plenty of people were looking forward to seeing guy perform. I bet they were pissed. Following the tweets after leaving for the night, there were lots of complaints and Viagra jokes about Big Boi. Life goes on.

The big, huge, unfortunate lowlight to have ever happened? We missed Deadmau5! And we’re still kicking ourselves. Our ride picked us up at seven, an hour or so before he even hit the stage. #EpicFAIL on our part.

Regardless of the minor lows, we had a fantastic weekend in the city filled with great music, new friends, and plenty of good food!

Outside Lands Music, Food & Arts Festival

My roommate says that I'm lucky; her reason being that I have won stuff periodically. Last year I won two Flip Camcorders and in the past I've won concert tickets, including Treasure Island Music Festival, Download Festival, and Flyleaf. When I entered the Dibbs contest for Outside Lands tickets, I never thought I would win. But Monday night I found out that I was the lucky Facebook winner for two 3-day passes to the music, food & art festival and am absolutely stoked!!!

There's so many great bands playing this year, with some HUGE headliners: Muse, Phish, and Arcade Fire!

Obviously I'm looking forward to the headliners on all three nights, but there's so many other fantastic bands to see! I created my schedule using the Outside Lands application on my iPhone, though I'm sure there's some great bands playing I don't know about yet. Here's my must-see list so far:

Case In Theory: Changes EP

When you’re introduced to a band who credits life, art, zombie movies and tacos as their influences (see: Myspace), one must expect a unique blend of styles, genres, and of course, personality.

Friends since high school, Jonathan Posadas (lead vocals/guitar) and Tadeo Ramirez (guitar) began writing songs together in early 2006. By the end of the year Jamin Bracken (drums) and Ben Everett (bass) were both brought on board; the four formed Case In Theory (CIT), three words randomly said by Bracken one night that stuck.

The band’s sound is an infusion of indie-rock and alternative, with climactic choruses and heavy emotion. When talent is ripping at the seams, it’s inevitable that a band like this will catch the ears of music lovers near and far. CIT has expanded their geographical presence throughout California with performances around the Bay Area and in Southern California venues such as the infamous Viper Room in Los Angeles. With a full-length album in the works, CIT promises to be a contender in the big, bad, awesome world of live music.

Available now on iTunes, “Changes” is the band’s second EP and it showcases the variety of styles and represented CIT’s overall sound. The album features “Stand Still,” “Foreign Lands (Day Dream...),” and “Righteous Path.” The band is heavily inspired by the life, love, and everyday lessons of its members. Radio-friendly, “Stand Still,” is a song about the feeling of being scrutinized and judged by others when putting yourself out there.

The artsy, sad song about love is “Foreign Lands (Day Dream...),” tells a story of a two lovers who day dream together, because in reality, the circumstances surrounding their relationship keep them from ever being together.

The darker track on the EP is “Righteous Path.” Guitarist Posadas says, “The lyrics were written at a time where I had a couple of deaths within a year and unfortunately, they were both suicides. So this song is a story about someone that died, but doesn't exactly know they are dead yet.”

There’s no denying that CIT has made a name for themselves in the Bay Area music scene and have developed a strong following. Proponents of the emerging South Bay music scene, the band has played nearly every venue throughout San Jose.

With an overwhelming amount of culture in the Bay Area, it is a fantastic place for art and music. The band often taps into their network of local artists, videographers, directors, and photographers for their projects and to help put San Jose on people’s radars. For photo shoots, the band sports t-shirts from local companies such as iMinusD, Yeoman, Cukui and AMall. Any artwork needed is usually done by local artists.

The band’s first full-length album will surely send them to bigger and better things. They have finished pre-production on the album and recorded 14 songs, although they are aiming for 11 tracks to make the cut to be on the album and they’re producing it themselves.

“We want the songs and the track listing to clearly convey our message, so right now we are working really hard to make them as perfect as we can,” Posadas says. The next few months will be full of “trimming fat and rearranging parts to make sure they're exactly the way we want them.”

You’ll have to wait for a tentative title for the upcoming album, scheduled to be released August/September 2011. Also in the works, CIT just finished their video for Kickstarter, a funding platform for creative projects, where fans, friends, family, and project supporters can donate to the band’s fundraising goal. Keep an eye out on their website and Facebook for how you can help them reach their goal through Kickstarter.

CIT pulls together from a range of influences including MuteMath, Mars Volta, 311, Blind Melon, and Dave Matthews. Similarities can be drawn from a talented pool of bands along the lines of Incubus, Circa Survive, and local long-time favorite Dredg. A comparison to any of the above bands is a testament to their hard work and dedication. CIT is devoted to the art of music-making and one can only be excited for what the future has in store for them: for sure a tour van purchase and nothing short of back to back touring to take over the west coast eclectic music scene.

Bay Area Musicians Take On Austin for #SXSW2011

Since 1987, Austin has held an annual conference called South by Southwest (SXSW). If you know what I'm talking about, please continue reading. If you don't, please crawl out from under your rock. Then continue reading.

SXSW has transformed over the years to become THE place for tech folk and music lovers to flock to Texas each March for what is often dubbed the “spring break for nerds.”

Musicians must pay a fee and submit their music to SXSW organizers and hope for a chance to play during the coveted music portion of the festival/conference. Upon being chosen, bands hit the road, hop on flights or hitchhike their way to the Lone Star State.

While many of the performers are from the United States, the conference has morphed into one known around the world for its huge tech presence. Thus it comes as no surprise that global talent would want in on the SXSW phenomenon.

With our fabulous array of local talent, of course Bay Area artists would make the final cut to play during one of the showcases, sessions or parties in Austin.

I found out about The Gallery through a demographic-targeted Facebook ad one day and listened to their music. I loved what I heard and have been following their journey ever since. The guys were really nice and sent me a couple copies of their Island Road EP that contains the songs "Life is Strange", "Love Fell Through" and "The Introduction." I'm sure you'll love their indie/folk rock music as much as I do. The Gallery will be releasing their next EP titled Come Alive on Feb. 22nd. (yay!)

The most recent news from these Massachusetts natives is that they were one of 16 unsigned bands chosen by the editors at Rolling Stone to compete for the most coveted prize in music - the cover of Rolling Stone. The Gallery needs your help now by voting for them.

Week 17 Review: Live 105's Not So Silent Night

Well 2010 was another year of great concerts but there were still a few I regret missing. So to start off my post, I'd like to thank Live 105 for ending '10 on a good musical note and bringing back a few headliners to the Bay Area.

In 2010:

I missed Broken Bells at The Regency Ballroom back in May and have been kicking myself ever since.
I sold my Outside Lands tickets to save $$$ and shafted myself out of seeing the hipsters dance to Phoenix. #fail
The Black Keys were in town in late September and played at Oakland's Fox Theater. I was swamped with work and pretty sure the show was sold out by the time I got my head out of my desk.

I'm sure you can imagine, the November 1st announcement of this year's lineup for Not So Silent Night (NSSN) had me jumping for joy! The Black Keys, Broken Bells, Phoenix, My Chemical Romance and The Smashing Pumpkins on one stage?! SOLD.

I didn't catch the LIVE 105 Local Band Contest winner: Finish Ticket -- sorry guys, maybe next time. Thank goodness I ran up the front stairs of HP Pavillion just as Broken Bells began playing "Ghost Inside." I would have flipped if I missed the Shins' frontman James Mercer and the fabulous producer Danger Mouse for the second time this year. Their set was mellow compared to the rest but no less worthwhile. Unfortunately, they didn't perform in front of a crowded arena. There were more empty seats than full and the floor wasn't even a quarter occupied. It was, however, only 6pm.

The Black Keys were a nice transition between Broken Bells and Phoenix. The Brothers duo performed most of their blues-rock set with a full band. "I Got Mine" was a crowd favorite along with their whistling hit "Tighten Up" (you know, from that Subaru commercial). Gosh and I swear Patrick Carney is a machine -- he makes the drums look ridiculously hard. Carney and singer-guitarist Dan Auerbach finished off the last few songs without the band in tow. The Ohio duo put on a great show.

A little side note: At an Incubus concert a few years ago there were signs posted all over the venue warning of the light show because it could cause seizures. Those signs should've been posted at Not So Silent Night. The strobe lights for the Phoenix set were definitely seizure-inducing, but the French foursome were a welcome rush of energy and excited the crowd. Everyone and their mother has heard "1901" so you can imagine most of the arena went nuts when it came on. They played my current favorites "Rome" and "Lisztomania," in addition to "Fences," all off their forth album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix.

As soon as My Chemical Romance came on stage, the room became defining. I had absolutely no idea that these guys had such a huge following. A majority of the 11,500 fans in attendance were definitely there to see MCR and they were hands down the loudest fans all evening. My MCR awareness peaked at the concert and I recognized a few songs that I've heard flipping through the stations periodically. One song in particular that I like and didn't know was a MCR song until NSSN was their newest single, "Sing." They played "Helena," which I recognized and "Teenagers." During "I'm Not Okay" (which I recognized too), the tween goth couple a few rows down awkwardly kissed during the chorus. From the looks of it, it was a first for both of them. That "Na Na Na" song is ridiculously annoying and was a little turned off when they played it. Overall, I've come to realize I do actually like a couple MCR songs and that they do put on a good show. Red-haired Gerard Way sure knows how to connect with his fans and get them out of their seats -- those MCR fans were stoked.

The big kahuna of the evening was Billy Corgan and his ~~hat~~ band, i.e. alt-rockers, The Smashing Pumpkins. While it was somewhat of a blurred 90s flashback, I enjoyed watching Billy and Co. and singing along with "Rat in a Cage," "Today," "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" and "Tonight, Tonight." They also played "Landslide" which I'll admit [blushing] I thought it was a Dixie Chicks original -- till I got school just now by Wikipedia. That's embarrassing. I haven't heard any of the Pumpkins' new music and while I'm sure they played some -- by the end of the night my ears were still ringing from MCR and I only recognized the familiar tunes.

Note: To whoever was smoking cigarettes in my section, you're gross. Smoking inside public buildings was so 1994.

Music News: Live 105 NSSN Local Band Contest

On Sunday, Live 105 announced the Top Ten Bands in the local band competition to open Not So Silent Night on Dec 10th at the HP Pavilion, which features Smashing Pumpkins, My Chemical Romance, Phoenix, The Black Keys, and Broken Bells. This is obviously a HUGE opportunity for one lucky band to share the stage with some amazing bands!

The Top Ten Finalists are: Beta State, I Am Empire, The Soft White Sixties, Finish Ticket, New Cadence, Kid Savant, Mister Loveless, Sentinel, Northern Son, and Trophy Fire.

You can listen to a track from each band and then vote for your favorite, so we encourage all of you to take a few minutes and VOTE HERE! Voting ends this Friday, December 3rd!

Week 16 Review: The Famous

"A shot of classic country with a post-punk chaser." - The Famous, Myspace

If you weren't at the Cupertino Brit on Friday, November 6, then you missed a night of stellar performances. Last, but not least, to hit the stage was local San Francisco-based roots rock, Americana foursome, The Famous. On vocals and guitar, Laurence Scott along with Victor Barclay (guitar and vocals), G.D. Hensley (bass), and Chris Fruhauf (drums) make up a talented group of individuals.

The Famous blew me away! Laurence Scott has such enthusiasm during live performances that radiates excitement and passion, and sets the tone of a highly anticipated show show. As a first timer, I knew right away this was going to be one hell of a show. From the first song, "Ghost," until the very last, a cover of Prince's "Purple Rain," there's an overwhelming amount of high energy coming from all four band members.

If you're a True Blood fan, Laurence's performance for "True Believer," off their first album, Light, Sweet Crude, might have sparked your memory of the near-animalistic church scene. See what I'm talking about in the video below.

You could get a free MP3 download of "Nothing," from the band's 2005 album for signing for The Famous mailing list. In addition to "Nothing" and "True Believer," they also played "Midway" and "Deconstruction Worker" off their first album. Off their 2010 album, Come Home To Me, The Famous performed "Moving On," "Without You," "Manu Negra," "Ain't Much Wrong," and "Cold Tonight."

Numerous musicians have had an influence on the band and you can hear it in their songs. Some of the notable musicians include Johnny Cash, AC/DC, The Pixies, Hank Williams Sr., Otis Redding, The Swinging Utters, Reverend Horton Heat, Willie Nelson, and a whole lot more. ZZ Top, another of their noted influencers, is mentioned in "Mano Negra": "I'd do anything for a rattle snack, or a ZZ Top keychain." Love that song.

The Famous wrapped up with an epic performance of Price's "Purple Rain." It was the perfect finale to great set.

Concert Review: Dredg & Circa Survive

On Sunday, November 7, I had the opportunity to see two bands I love on one bill and it was a magical night! This was my first time seeing Circa Survive live, and about my 5th time seeing Dredg. Animals As Leaders and Codeseven opened up this spectacular show at the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco.

Being a huge Dredg fan, I was most excited for their set. After hanging out in the bar with a variety of Dredg friends and fans, we went into the main room, found a good spot about halfway down the room, center stage, and braced ourselves for the music journey about to take place. With only a 30 minute set, Dredg focused on playing songs off their new album, The Pariah, the Parrot, the Delusion; with "Pariah," "Lightswitch," and "Savior" being the stand-out songs. Not letting their fans down, Dredg opened the set with their hits "Bug Eyes" and "Same Ol' Road," plus they threw in "Ode To The Sun" later on. One highlight was getting to hear a new song off their upcoming album due out in March 2011. It was a bit too drum and bass heavy for me compared to the melodic art rock I've come to love from the band, but I still enjoyed the overall composition of the song. I ran into bassist Drew Roulette in the lobby after their set and he mentioned that the new album is heavier and very danceable. One thing I've hoped for every time I've seen Dredg is for them to sing my favorite song "Matroshka (The Ornament)" off their album Catch Without Arms -- maybe someday I will finally have the pleasure seeing them play that song live!

By the time Circa Survive hit the stage, the venue was filled with excitement and the room was packed. I discovered Circa Survive a few years ago through some friends who kept playing On Letting Go in the background at parties. It was only recently that I finally heard songs off their newest album Blue Sky Noise. Front-man Anthony Green is probably one of the most energetic and magnetic performers I have ever seen!! He literally OWNS the stage, dancing, running, and leaping around in every direction, giving one of of the most heart-felt, emotional performances you can imagine. I was really surprised that 90% of the audience knew every lyric to every song, singing them so loud, they almost drowned out Anthony's vocals over the speakers! Witnessing a non-mainstream band have an audience that mesmerized that they hung on to every word was an experience in itself. A few moments that really stood out during their set were: 1) when Animals As Leaders guitarist Tosin Abasi joined the band on stage for "The Glorious Nosebleed"; 2) when approximately 15 'Creature Club' fanclub members came out to sing background vocals during "Spirit in the Stairwell"; and 3) when they threw out 10-20 huge balloons filled with confetti and lights into the audience that kept bouncing around and finally popping all over the place. Anthony even hugged one of the giant balloons, which was quite a sight! The night ended perfectly with Circa's newest hit "I Felt Free" and the audience just went wild.

A truly exhilarating and unforgettable show with so many talented bands! I would also like to thank my friend Melissa Ashley for taking the awesome photos above!

Week 15 Review: Careless Hearts

Sorry for the late review. I've been out sick for the last week, but I am now officially off of my deathbed! Let's talk about the November 5th show, when I saw Careless Hearts at the Cupertino Britannia Arms.

Earlier in the night, The Devil's Sunday Best and Dynamite Truck played to a crowded room. By the time Careless Hearts got on stage, the shots were flowing and the Gordon Biersch Märzen drink special was a popular choice.

Careless Hearts opened their set with "I'd Be a Wreck" followed by "Raspberry Wine" [see video below] and a new track, "Holding Your Breath." The five-man band consists of singer/guitarist Paul Kimball, lead guitarist Derek See, drummer Eric Powers, bassist Brian Michael, and pedal steel/banjo player Jody Clarke. They've been playing gigs together since 2005 and are heading into the study this month to record a few tracks.

After the group threw back a shot, Paul introduces the next song, "Many Possible Worlds," and says, "so we don't know this song but the whiskey helps us get through it." At this point, the gals in the front were dancin' around and everyone was really enjoying themselves.

In honor of Gram Parsons' November 5th birthday, Careless Hearts covered "Still Feeling Blue" off Gram's 1973 album GP -- another crowd pleaser.

One of my favorite songs of the night, "One and Sunrise," was actually written about the very place we were at: the Britannia Arms!

The show will be headlined by Smashing Pumpkins, with performances by My Chemical Romance, Phoenix, The Black Keys, and Broken Bells, with the local band contest winner opening the whole shebang!

CD Review: Kaura - That Which Defines Us

I've watched Kaura (pronounced kay-aura) for the past five years and always thought they had something unique and special. With the release of their full-length album That Which Defines Us, the Berkeley-based band has proven to me that it was worth the wait! The band was nice enough to send me a free copy of the deluxe CD/DVD package and I've been enjoying it ever since.

Kaura is comprised of Malcolm Guess (vocals, guitar, tabla), Benjamin Jones (drums, percussion), Adam LaBay (bass), Ben Rojas (guitar), and Yosh (hammered dulcimer, gamelan, percussion); all very talented musicians that together create a unique musical voice. Kaura takes the haunting hard rock sounds that Tool made famous with Undertow and redefines the sound with the melodic, ethereal twist of ancient instruments, such as the hammered dulcimer and gamelan bells.

That Which Defines Us starts off strong with "Sera Phi" and "One Becomes Two," two hard-hitting songs that really stand out. I'm also a big fan of the lyrics, guitars, and keys in "Epemeral Fall" -- it comes across as a very spiritual song with a poetic message. The song that caught my attention back in 2005 was "Silence Speaks Louder" and is still my absolute favorite. I really love the intricate percussion and hammered dulcimer work within the song, plus it's such a beautifully composed song with all it's changes that lead to such an epic climax that grabs you mind, body, and soul!

"Alarmico Saturn" is one of the more melodic, softer songs on the album that really shows-off the ethereal beauty of their ancient instruments. "2 C&B" starts off with heavy guitars but leads into a very melodic song with a catchy chorus. For those of you that love the softer side, I urge you to listen to "If This Were To End," probably the most heavenly song on the album -- it makes me feel like you were floating on clouds with cherubs singing around you. The album ends with the ballad "A Lament For Change" which flows into blank space followed by the secret song instrumental outro.

Kaura is definitely a band worth watching; they've already been invited to open for Tool, Rob Zombie, and Godsmack by Bill Graham Presents, and had A Perfect Circle’s Paz Lenchantin play on their self-released EP. Plus their recording process included sessions with Tool and System of a Down Producer/Engineer Sylvia Massy-Shivy, who's work I've also been a fan of.

Music News: Northern Son

Since Spring 2009, I've had the privilege and pleasure to work with San Jose rockers Northern Son in booking and promotions. I always knew this band has something special; their music is so versatile that there's something there for every generation to enjoy. Over the past year and half, I've witnessed their quick rise to the top of the South Bay music scene, having played both Left Coast Live 2009 and 2010, being selected to play the local band stage at Live 105's BFD in June 2010, and even playing a show supporting Civil Twilight! Their first album Wider Skies was a huge success with their hit "Love Will Find A Way" and their new single "Spin" is regularly heard on Live 105's Soundcheck, and was featured in the season finale of The Spin Crowd. I'm so excited for their sophomore release Spin, due out in December, so stay tuned for CD Release show news coming soon!!

I was happy to see that the Silicon Valley Metro selected Northern Son for their Rocktober 2010 issue, which hit stands yesterday. The article is aptly named:
"Prodigal Son -- Even losing a founding member can't derail the ambitions of South Bay phenoms Northern Son"

My favorite part: "...the key to Northern Son's immense appeal is their ability to coat simple, slightly rootsy songs in gorgeous, surprising arrangements. It's a big, powerful sound with instant accessibility, and on their newest single, "Spin," they show even more pop prowess..."

CD Review: Blood and Water

I'm a visual person, so interesting album covers always catch my attention and the music itself tends to be decent (or amazing -- i.e. remember that one album with the naked baby?). So when Blood and Water found me and plopped In Character on my doorstop a.k.a. inbox, I was instantly intrigued. Who's wearing that? Where would someone get that realistic bear costume? But more importantly, what kind of music am I about to listen to?

I clear my mind of any preconceived notions and press play. Turns out my theory on interesting album covers proved right again. This album rocks!

Fast forward a few weeks and In Character is on repeat in my car, at the gym, while I'm cleaning and even while I'm showering. I love "Sleep It Off," the first song off their sophomore album, which kick starts the fun, easy-going vibe these guys radiate. "Oblio" is another of my favorites - a ska-infused anthem worth checking out. The whole album will keep you hands off - there's no need to skip through or songs to try to find a good one. Turns out each song encompasses the utmost highest quality of sound and deserves a listen.

In Character entertains a combination of styles and could easily be classified in multiple genres (punk, punk rock, ska and alternative). With captivating lyrics and danceable hits, In Character would be a great addition to any college house party playlist. Actually, having Blood and Water perform live at a college house party would be even better, but we can't all be that lucky.

Week 14 Review: Rishloo

Take a strong base of Tool, throw in two cups of theatrics, a dash of Dredg, and sprinkle in some Dream Theater, and you've got the recipe for Rishloo, Seattle's very own progressive rock band. Last Wednesday was the third time the band has come through San Jose on one of my shows, and each time they make a bigger impact, impressing audiences, and making many new fans!

Rishloo consists of Andrew on vocals, David on guitar, Sean on bass, and Jesse on drums, and together they are probably the most talented unsigned band I have ever seen live. Their signature sound blends ambient guitars with melodic vocals and solid beats, plus intense lyrics and an overall epic performance that will leave you stunned!

Andrew has this beautiful, melodic, multi-octave vocal range that one could say borders on angelic, and he grabs your attention with his opera-esque presence. David is the shirtless eye-candy in the band, with a sexy sway that moves from graceful to out of control, leaving you on edge as you watch him bounce around the stage. Sean is a force to reckon with on bass; he's the backbone of the band with an almost aggressive yet controlled stance that demands respect. Last but definitely not least, Jesse is a very skilled and powerful drummer, that pulls the band together with his ease, control, and constant beat switches.

I was stoked to see that they are still playing their 2007 hit "Freaks & Animals" live (from their album Eidolon), as it is one of my favorite songs, though I was also quite intrigued with the last song of their set, "Weevil Bride," off their new album Feathergun. Their songs are such an impressive blend of melodic verses to hard-hitting choruses and clever bridges, they just grab your soul on a musical journey of story-telling that leaves you breathless.

The band members all interact so well with each other on stage, it's a fluid, cohesive band that looks so comfortable and at home when performing. It's like watching Phantom of the Opera with a punch!! Rishloo has redefined the concept of "rock opera" with an unforgettable experience that will leave you longing for more -- it's almost orgasmic! Why some major label hasn't signed this band to a massive deal is dumbfounding...

Week 13 Review: Hello Monster

San Francisco based Hello Monster opened a fabulous show this past Saturday at X Sports Bar + Music Lounge at Homestead Lanes. This indie pop band worked with Scott Llamas of PopSmear Records on their first EP As For Tonight, which shines through in their well-composed songs full of power chords, strong vocals, and meaningful lyrics.

I asked the guys about the band name and they told me that it was a process of elimination more than anything. They kicked around ideas like "Press Play" or any kind of reference to the movie "Big Trouble in Little China," but then they realized that they would probably be sued using one of those. After that they settled on Hello Monster, and agreed that they would never, under any circumstances, allow any buggy-eyed kittens or rainbows to be used in their artwork. Quite amusing considering the cutesy Sesame Street graphic they sent me for flyers! :-)

At the show, I planned on picking up their set lists so I could give my readers a better feel of their whole set and songs, but since I didn't, I will have to resort to my failing memory’s recollection...

"A Perfect Nine" was my favorite song of the set, though "The Sound of Light" was a close second. Both are nice flowing songs with catchy lyrics and smooth progressions from verses to chorus. The very upbeat "This Is Still My Life" seems like it’s most influenced by pop punk bands like Green Day and All-American Rejects with its riffs and chord progressions, though the rest of the instrumentation gives it a much more melodic indie twist, something in the lines of Incubus.

Hello Monster is absolutely fun to watch -- there’s definitely a cohesive feel within the band as they groove together with big smiles on their faces. One can’t help but to sway in unison with grins to match those on stage, as they deliver their powerful and energetic set.

Having recently lost their original drummer Bobby, the trio (comprised of Paul, Sid, and Bill) is now working on finding a replacement, so if you know any drummers out there looking for a solid band, let them know to audition! Plus don't forget to follow them on Twitter!

The band was nice enough to answer our questionnaire -- their favorite albums sure got me to chuckle!

Q: Who would you want to collaborate with musically and why?
A: Tom Waits because he has such a completely unique take on music; David Bowie, since he's pretty much the greatest musician living today; and Kanye, because let's be real - everything that guy touches turns to gold.

Q: If you had to choose one band/artist (dead or alive) to tour with, who would you choose?
A: Ozzy Osbourne (back when he bit the heads off of bats), The Beatles, and We Are Scientists. All on the same bill with us. We'd probably have to open, I guess.

Q: From your life experiences (job, love, upbringing, travel, books, art, etc.), what do you draw from the most for your musical creativity; what has influenced you the most?
A: Girls. Friends, life in general, beat literature. Girls. Relationships. Girls. Though now we're thinking of writing a new song about what it is everyone else writes songs about. And girls.

Q: What is each band member's favorite album of all time?
Paul: ECW Anarchy Rocks
Sid: Now! Volume 2
Bill: Disney's Chilling, Thrilling, Sounds of the Haunted House

Q: Who is your favorite local or unsigned band/artist?
A: Hands down it's got to be I, the Mighty. We're big fans and think they're really the biggest local band to watch over the next year or two.

Music News: Summersalt Music Festival

The 1st annual Summersalt Music Festival is this weekend on Saturday October 9th at Fort Mason Center in San Francisco! Eye Heart SF invites you to join them for a day of music, food, drinks, arts and games as they forge a new path for the local music scene and surrounding SF Bay Area community. This event is All Ages; must be 21 and over to drink.

The line up for the festival is: Zion-I, Warren G, Vito from The Rapture, Butterfly Bones, DJ Aaron Axelsen, K. Flay, Bayonics, Alexander Spit, Sonnymoon, Music For Animals, Mister Loveless, Jeffery Paradise, DJ Sake-1, Audiodub, Designer Deejays, DJ CAMS, and The Flying Tortillas.

The Box Office opens and at 10am and doors open at 11am (rain or shine). Music starts at 12noon and tickets are $20. Parking is limited and there will be a no re-entry policy in effect. Food and alcohol will be available for purchase.

Week 12 Review: Citabria

Local music lovers are discovering the progressive rock sounds of Citabria (pronounced si-tah-bree-uh) this year, and let's just say that this talented foursome is taking the Bay Area by storm! Citabria rocked the X Sports Bar + Music Lounge at Homestead Lanes this past Saturday, impressing the masses and making many new fans. Their set was possibly one of the best performances I have seen this year; it was full of energy, passion, ambiance, and ingenuity!

Fresh off their 1st place win at the Your Music Magazine San Jose Edition of Your Music Olympicks, Citabria has been making more and more of an impact on the local scene. They are one of the few bands in which everything works together harmoniously; their music is powerful and unique, their stage presence magnificent, and their energy contagious! Kevin Azevedo is a solid drummer and powerful backbone with such relentless resilience on percussion; Nate Dias is an exquisite guitar player that's fun to watch as he integrates with the rest of the band; Edgar Fernandez grooves on bass, showing off his fervent technique that ties the music together; and Leopoldo Larsen is your quintessential front-man, with a compelling presence on guitar and vocals that dominates the stage.

I wish I knew all the song titles to give you a play-by-play of their set, but sadly I'm still discovering each song myself as I listen to their album The Stereo Guillotine in my car every day. What I can tell you is that it was impressive to see the audience crowd into the venue to watch Citabria with awe and amazement! There must have been close to 100 people that couldn't take their eyes off the stage, bobbing their heads in unison while this accomplished band gave them everything they had. It was an euphoric experience that took the venue by force with an unforgettable performance that will linger in the minds and souls of the audience for weeks, if not months!

Music News: Good Hustle

Good Hustle may just be the best band in San Jose. They are definitely the most unique band in the Bay Area. This week the Metro did a great piece on this talented trio that I encourage everyone to read. Plus they are playing The Blank Club TONIGHT with Dirty Odd Seven and Dirty Pillows, so that's the place to be for amazing live music, starting at 9pm!

Week 11 Review: Fight The Quiet

Kicking off their fall tour a few days earlier, Arizona band Fight the Quiet played a show at the Cupertino Britannia Arms on Saturday September 18 with Pebble Theory and Montana 1948. For their first time in Cupertino, the boys of FTQ did well; they put on a fun show and left town with a few more fans.

With an understanding that the Brit crowd probably hadn’t heard their music before, FTQ played a song most are familiar with, "Back in the U.S.S.R." The band did a fabulous cover of the Fab Four’s 1970s hit, to which Barb and I couldn’t help but sing along. The songs that followed were off of their newest EP, Let Me In.

Local Bay Area drummer Christian, "The Dragon" as he is known to most, filled in since previous percussionist Brock permanently left the band. This tour is what Nathan calls Christian's "road audition," though he also mentioned that as long as the dragon doesn't attack him while driving, Christian will most likely pass and become a permanent fixture in the band. Tim’s shiny blue bass sparkled while he and lead guitarist Todd rocked out for their third show of tour.

Nathan was great at interacting with the crowd, getting them to clap and dance along to the fun, flirtatious "Sway." At one point he even jumped off the front of the stage and busted out a few quality dance moves. Barbara’s favorite song of their set was the EP's title track, but coming in at a close second, was the band’s last song of the night "Scenes From The Cutting Room Floor. I really liked "This is the Moment" -- powerful lyrics and an all-around good representation of the band’s voice and style.

FTQ had a great performance and I’m looking forward to seeing them the next time they’re in town. If they sound familiar to you and just can’t put a finger on where you’ve heard them before, I suggest taking a look at their well-established bio, which includes past gigs (Summerfest and SXSW), who they’ve played with (Jack's Mannequin and Rufio), and their air plays (MTV and Xbox 360). They've even had songs from their first album Lessons In Vanity licensed for TV shows, which still play to this day!

With some awesome music cred, I wish the boys luck on the rest of their tour, although I know they don’t need it.

Week 10 Review: Beta State

Two days ago I was undecided on whether to go to the Alien Ant Farm show at the Avalon, but since my good friend Bryan wanted to see them live, I decided to go to the show and all I can say is that I'm super stoked I went!

We arrived a bit late, right at the end of Boom Boom Stereo's set but before bay area sweethearts Beta State took the stage. The Avalon was buzzing with people, a pleasant surprise for a weeknight show, and I easily ran into more than 25 local music scenesters in the first 10 minutes I was there! My friend Stephanie Haney took some great photos of Beta State and Alien Ant Farm at the show, so check them out!

If you haven't seen Beta State perform yet, then I highly recommend you go check out this marvelous indie rock band; they are phenomenal! Being a huge Dredg fan, I am naturally drawn to ambient guitar delays, but Beta State is much more than that. They embody everything that I love in music -- a soothing blend of artistic/melodic music with beautiful lyrics that just penetrate the body and mind! Adrian Robison is a powerful drummer, smiling away as he keeps perfect rhythm; Justin Kastner brings the soul as he bounces around on bass, adding a nice touch on background vocals; Ryan Hernandez is the master behind the heavenly guitar riffs that I personally can't get enough of; and Matt McDonald is the perfect match with his angelic voice, a great front-man to lead the music-loving troops into the pearly gates of Beta State!

The band just released their debut album Stars, which can be found on iTunes, although you can also download it for FREE (for those that are a bit broke)! If you choose the latter option, then please be kind enough to spread the word about this amazing band and write an album review on iTunes so they get more exposure. I personally LOVE LOVE LOVE the CD and can't wait to see what this astonishing foursome will do next!

Beta State's next show is on Saturday October 23 at X Sports Bar + Music Lounge at Homestead Lanes with the Fighting Jacks, Lakes, and The Record Winter for only $8 (all ages w/ full bar for 21+).

A: Van Dyke Parks, who is known to us for doing the string arrangements for two of our favorite albums, Diorama and Young Modern, by Silverchair. His arrangements display a taste and emotion that we respect immensely.

A: Led Zeppelin - Why? It's Zeppelin.

A: Our personal experiences, especially having to do with the trials, tribulations, heartbreak, and excitement of growing up through your early twenties.

Week 9 Review: Back Pocket Memory

I had the pleasure of seeing Back Pocket Memory play on Saturday and was once again thoroughly impressed with this Southern California pop punk influenced band with a soulful rock edge!

When BPM first took the stage, you could tell the audience was curious to see what this Burbank band was all about. Only a lucky few had seen them before when they played Left Coast Live and the Cupertino Brit earlier this year. But once they started playing, I got to watch the audience grow in front of the stage; you could see the smiles on their faces as they got pulled into the the band's delivery of their music. The energy in the room continued to rise throughout their set, climaxing into an electrifying finish when they played their hit "Bergerac" -- did I mention that I just LOVE the chorus of that song!?! There was so much amazing feedback from the audience; everyone wanted to know when this amazing five-piece would come to the Bay Area again!

What makes BPM stand out so much isn't just their music, which stands strong on it's own, but also their stage presence. Each band member is absolutely fun to watch; you can just tell that they love what they do, enjoy being on stage with one another, and are proud of their craft. Singer Chris Pennington is absolutely adorable on stage, with vocals and a face that just about any girl will drool over, plus he really knows how to interact with the audience. Drummer Jason Montgomery might just be the happiest, most smiling drummer I've ever seen; you can't help but smile along with him. Ian Felchlin delivers the punch on his six string guitar, and bassist Rob Gallagher and guitarist Eddie Rosales literally bounce around together non-stop, it's almost exhausting just to watch them. They give a solid performance that leaves you breathless (literally) and wanting so much more! I can honestly say that BPM might just be the most charismatic band I've seen live and I look forward to many more shows with them.

I also recommend for everyone to pick up a copy of their newly released album Strangers at their next South Bay show, which is scheduled for Sat Nov 13. Music News: Kings of Leon

Kings of Leon debuted the video for their new song "Radioactive" yesterday and it shows the the Kings at a Southern-style summer barbecue. Rumor has it that they wrote this song a few albums ago, but couldn't figure out a way to use it until now, after their success with Only The Night [per Madden on Channel 92.3].

I've only heard it about three times now, but I'm already hooked on the song, which is flavored with southern rock roots and a hint of gospel. It grabs the listeners attention quickly with it's unique guitar intro, then sucks you in with the chorus: "It's in the water, it's where you came from." If this song is any indication of their upcoming album Come Around Sundown releasing October 19, then I'm all ears!

Week 8 Review: Kung Fu Vampire

I've known Kung Fu Vampire for awhile now and been to most, if not all, his local shows for the past 4 years; most of the time with his full band, a few times doing a guest appearance at a local open mic. But what I experienced last Friday at the Avalon was a completely new side of Kung Fu Vampire. This show was the last performance in his DEAD4Life Tour, his official return home after touring for most of 2010 with Twiztid of Psychopathic Records (formed by Insane Clown Posse) and Potluck (Suburban Noize), as well as headlining his own tour with Horrorcore icon MARS (Mad Insanity Records) and Liquid Assassin.

For me, Kung Fu Vampire (KFV) was always a treat to see live. The first time I saw him I was highly impressed with his gothic hip-hop style, especially with the live band and his opera-esque female singer. It was something new, something different, yet really cool, and you got caught up into the whole spectacle and his obvious talent. And if you were lucky, you got to see him do backflips on stage! I've seen some changes in the line-up over the years, including original keyboardist and songwriter Sadie Flick leaving the band, Lainey Leone joining on vocals for one year, and the addition of Joyce "Statis" Kuo on violin, then moving over to guitar when the talented Razz took over on violin. But nothing prepared me for the completely different version of Kung Fu Vampire on Friday!

Not sure if it has to do with Kung Fu Vampire going on tour or other internal band factors, but all I know is that the live show has changed. First off, the stage is decorated with bloody mannequin parts, which are definitely interesting stage props which work well with the horrorcore market. Then as the band comes on stage you realize that members are missing, mainly the lovely cellist Miss Fortune, a band icon who's been with KFV for over 8 years! Secondly you see that that Mr. West is no longer on drums, but replaced by someone named Chris Paxton (per his drum kit); though I will note that Chris turned out to be a fabulous percussionist. At this point I'm relieved to see Count Nunez on keys, Mr. Pollett on bass, and Razz on violin, then it finally clicks in that the female vocalist is different than expected. Oh boy!

The show starts with playback of the True Blood theme "Bad Things" by Jace Everett; a compelling choice to use a country song, though I grasp the vampire culture reference. Kung Fu Vampire takes the stage in his standard kimono outfit, rapping and owning the crowd in his usual style that he perfected long ago. I'm doing my best to get into it, though it appears his fanbase has changed a bit in the past year and I don't recognize anyone around like I used to at his shows. After a few songs, and to my disappointment, KFV changes out of the kimono and sports red Dickie shorts, a white button-up shirt with a red tie and matching Nike red-stripe on white shoes. He also brings his "dead girls" out on stage, which I expected to be some sexy vampire dancers, but instead get a variety of scantily-clad girls that seem just a bit awkward with their attempted dance moves. At this point I'm just wondering what the hell is going on! The part that resonated the least with me was the female vocalist. Don't get me wrong, she has pipes, but she has that higher pitch Betty Boop-like voice, which doesn't quite hit that opera sound I've loved so much in past KFV singers Sadie and Lainey. The whole experience is just weird for me, I feel like I'm in a Twilight Zone episode.

Granted the performance overall was good and I will always love "the one and only live band in horrorcore" -- but I wanted that huge theatrical performance as I've seen in the past! It made me reflect back to the time when San Jose Taiko performed with Kung Fu Vampire that blew the VooDoo Lounge audience away. I'd like to add that one highlight of the evening was seeing the painting the live artist did during the show of KFV (see photo at top); it was just awesome!

I walked away from the show missing that KFV performance and energy of the past, feeling like I was jibbed. Kung Fu Vampire will always be dear to me and hopefully the missing cello will return to complete the band once more. In the meantime, I leave you with the new bad-ass and visually stunning video for "Grinder," filmed by local music video guru Element 151.

Interview: Dirty Penny

Santa Cruz glam rock band Dirty Penny recently finished touring across the country with The Expendables and are only home for a few weeks before jet setting to the UK for their first European tour. Dirty Penny drummer, Spencer Joseph a.k.a Spanky Savage, had a few moments to answer.

Q: Who would you want to collaborate with musically and why?
A: Lil Wayne because apparently that's all you have to do to be famous anymore, but seriously, the Beastie Boys.

Q: If you had to choose one band/artist (dead or alive) to tour with, who would you choose?
A: I would have loved to tour with Avenged Sevenfold before The Rev died, because he was one of my favorite drummers of recent times.

Q: From your life experiences (job, love, upbringing, travel, books, art, etc.), what do you draw from the most for your musical creativity; what has influenced you the most?
A: Life on the road influenced the writing for our last album the most for sure. Other than that, it is mostly our musical influences and personalities that influenced the writing process.

Q: What are your top 5 favorite albums of all time?
A: This is a tough question because that list changes all the time and I also like all kinds of music. I'd rather like to list my top five genres of music right now and they are:
1. Metal (not cookie monster singing though)
2. Rock
3. Indie Rock
4. Pop (mainstream force-fed type)
5. Anything that makes me wanna dance

Q: Who is your favorite local band/artist?
A: My favorite local band out of Santa Cruz would have to be The Expendables because they are good friends of mine and they are also extremely talented musicians. I also have to mention the Stellar Corpses because those guys are a great band and they are also getting out there on the road and getting their music out to the people (unlike most bands from our hometown).

CD Review: Montana 1948

Montana 1948 just released their 2nd album Picket Fence in early July and it’s absolutely brilliant! The LP features 12 well-composed songs with catchy riffs and a driving energy that is refreshing to find. It starts off strong with their current radio single “Final Straw,” which flows nicely into “Don’t Be Too Late,” one of my favorites on the record, whose lyrics inspired the album’s title. I’m also a big fan of “January Jones” and “How to Swim,” both drenched with guitar delays and riffs straight out of the Dredg handbook. I can relate to “One Last Drink” a lot, a brilliant ballad about having one last cocktail together at the end of a failed relationship; it’s filled with ingenious lyrics, including, “I sit I reminisce about the times that I won’t miss.” The album ends beautifully with the hit “Mexico” and the emotionally charged ballad “Nineteen Years.” The musical composition of every track is perfectly matched around Ryan Lafferty’s sultry vocals and cleverly written lyrics, yet it’s obvious that every band member plays an integral part to each song’s arrangement and flow. All around, this album is a rare gem that is hard to find these days, and I love it from beginning to end. I encourage all indie rock lovers to download this album; you won’t be disappointed!

If you're eager to catch this talented band live, then come to the Britannia Arms in Cupertino on Saturday September 18 to see Montana 1948 up close and personal! They are playing with Pebble Theory and Fight The Quiet. The show starts at 9pm, has $5 cover, and is 21+ with valid ID.

Week 7 Review: Drop Dead Sixty

On Saturday I had the absolute privilege to see Drop Dead Sixty play at the Britannia Arms in Cupertino and I was thoroughly impressed. Imagine Stone Temple Pilots with a modern twist, add in a hint of Muse, and you have this East Bay band consisting of Mike Kerosene on vocals, Gavin Billy Cougar on guitar and keyboard, Matt Young on drums/percussion, and Joe Dalva on bass and backup vocals.

Their set started strong with a slow intro that dived into "Winter Years," then went full force into the Muse cover "Hysteria," grabbing the audience's attention instantly and holding it for the rest of their solid performance. I really enjoyed "A Safe Return" and "Gone For Tomorrow," as well as "The Universe," which features Gavin on keyboards, which was one of the first songs Mike and him wrote together. Singer Mr. Kerosene's theatrical poise is a charismatic energy that you get captivated; it's difficult not to watch his every move and facial expressions. I heard people whisper that he's the next Scott Weiland during their cover of STP's "Down," but I believe his vocals are stronger and his stage presence much more fascinating. Bassist Joe and drummer Matt are a strong backbone for this exquisite foursome, while Gavin shines on guitar and keys, adding a bit of that mysterious into the mix.

Drop Dead Sixty ended their set epically with their debut of "Lie With A Smile," a brand new song which left the audience craving for more, and one more song they got! I'm excited about booking this talented band on more shows, as well as working with them more closely in artist development.

Interview: Curious Quail

We met with the men of Curious Quail on Wednesday and enjoyed a lovely conversation with Mike Shirley-Donnelly (vocals/guitar), Sean Nolan (guitar/vocals), Marcel Mendoza (bass/vocals/beatbox), and Alan Chen (violin/guitar). Sadly their drummer/keyboardist Joey Guthrie was not able to join us due to being quite ill. Here's how our interview went!

Barbara: Tell us about your background.
Mike: I've been playing guitar and singing for 15 years. I used to be in bands but didn't like how everyone contributed to the songwriting process and decided to do it all by myself. However, it felt awkward doing live shows with just me and my laptop so I decided I wanted to jam with my friends that were musicians.

Robin: Did you guys grow up together or how did you meet?
Sean: Mike filled in for Meta Bear last year and I knew Joey from being in other bands together. Mike brought in Marcel. We thought it would be nice to bring in a violinist and just then our friend Alan moved back into town. All of us went to Independence High School, but Mike.

Barbara: Was Left Coast Live your first show together as a band?
Mike: We did acoustic shows together before that, but Left Coast Live was our first full band [electric] show. Though Alan was not with us that day.
Sean: Every time we play it's a bit different. Sometimes it's without Alan or Marcel. It's like we can change the shape of the beast.
Mike: I like to say we are the "same entity with five different faces."

Barbara: How was your Left Coast Live experience?
Mike: It was amazing. We really enjoyed ourselves and liked playing an outdoor venue.

Robin: How did you come up with band name?
Mike: I didn't want it to be my name but I knew I wanted something bird related. People have always said I do weird bird things. [Mike demonstrates how he sits at times -- bird-like, indeed). Quail is the California state bird. And they're curious.

Barbara: Can each of you tell me your three main influences?
Mike: Smashing Pumpkins Gish, Matthew Good [Canadian artist], and Alanis Morrissette's Jagged Little Pill [another Canadian!]. All of these are determined by their time period and are album specific.
Sean: "Smells Like Teen Spirit" though I heard the MTV Unplugged album first, then got into Nevermind. I actually didn't listen to Nirvana when they first came out but remember seeing Nevermind posters at Tower thinking "what is this crap?", but then later I got to like it. Also guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani on the technical side. I like the "show-offy" guitar of Satriani with how Nirvana mashes strings together.
Marcel: As a bassist, I'm influenced by Mike. Also Joe Satriani, death metal, and drums & bass. Say Anything, who are ridiculously awesome, and Spill Canvas, since they capture emotions really well. There's also my Uncle Ted playing guitar was my idol growing up. [Sean pipes in that he also grew up listening to his Dad play guitar].
Alan: Soul Asylum, Green Day, Smashing Pumpkins, and I also wanted to say Alanis. I was a 90's kid! Since I'm a technical violinist, I also like classical. [Alan mentioned a classical artist name but our Flip died at this point and sadly we have no recollection of the name]

Robin: I see you're working on an album right now?
Mike: I was already in the process of recording it myself when band formed so I'm continuing that way. I'm using some musicians on tracks, specifically Sean. The full band would be on the next album.

Barbara: When is your next show?
Mike: Sat Sept 11th at Sunnyvale Art Gallery with Et Al and Marcel doing solo performance [under the name Randomher0] at 7pm.
Barbara: I have a show on Sept 11 and Robin will be out of town so we won't be able to come to that one. Do you have any other shows?
Mike: There will also be some acoustic shows at Caffe Trieste and Blue Rock Shoot. Plus, on November 5th we have acoustic show at the Best Buy Music Store in Dublin from 7-9pm.

There were times when we all got very chatty in between questions and various information came up in the conversation, so here's a list of some interesting facts we found out about the band members:

* Mike's wife is due in late September. Sean and his girlfriend gave the happy couple a custom Quail baby onesie at the baby shower that they made using the band's logo. [so awesome!]
* Alan's violin is named Charlotte. According to Alan, "she just looked like a Charlotte."
* Sean's guitars are all named with letter "A" [we didn't get to find out what all their names were]
* Mike had a 2004 Blackberry that was "crucified with duct tape and money" and he finally got a new phone.
* Audience member once yelled out "I want to have your Quail Egg" which Mike thought was awesome.

Barbara: Any big plans for the rest of 2010?
Mike: I'm focusing on becoming a dad and finishing the album before the baby comes. It's crunch time; I knows if it's not done by then, I won't have time anymore! My little girl kicks when I play. She's going to be a rock baby!

Barbara: What is your favorite place to play?
Mike: Caffe Trieste. We love Roger.
Sean: It's really great when you get the 2nd floor jumping. [they all laugh]

Concert Review: Lady Gaga

Tuesday night I had the pleasure of seeing Lady Gaga at the HP Pavilion, and let's just start this off by saying I had an absolute blast! This was my first dance/pop/non-rock band concert and I really enjoyed the theatrics and energy of it all. Semi Precious Weapons were a unique but not surprising choice to open; they know Gaga from before she was famous and spoke about a time when they played small clubs with her to only 12 people. Frontman Justin Tranter is quite the entertainer that did a wonderful job getting the crowd ramped up for Lady Gaga. Just the way he would pronounce and accentuate every syllable of her name would get the crowd crazy with screams.

Lady Gaga's silhouette entrance in frozen poses that changed with certain musical parts of her opening song "Dance In The Dark" were electrifying to watch, teasing the audience with anticipation of actually seeing the superstar. Once the curtain raised the fans were in bliss, with visuals, lights and dancers that overwhelmed the senses with joy, electrifying everyone into a dancing, jumping chaos.

Lady Gaga designed her performance into four creative acts; a journey to the "Monster Ball" -- with fascinating sets that moved from cityscape with neon lights, to the subway station, through a dark thorny forest battling a tentacle bearing monster with huge teeth, and finally the dance party, aka ball. Visually it was one of the most beautiful shows I've been to and I was impressed with the choreography and costumes. Highlights included the flaming piano sequence, the winged outfit with moving headpiece (in photo above), and oxymoron neon signs such as "SexyUgly" that demanded attention.

It was two hours of dancing bliss, soaking in everything on stage, from the elaborate sets and stunning outfits to the full band rockin' out her dance hits with bare-chested Jesus on guitar. Lady Gaga let us know she's the real deal, making sure she said "San Jose" as much as possible to connect with her fans. Overall an exhilarating experience, though I doubt any show is worth $300 for two tickets, mostly when the artist herself tells us not to worry about money during the show!

Week 6 Review: Ish

Good luck trying to classify this band into less than five genres. Hailing from the South Bay, the band Ish blends numerous influences and forms a sound of their own.

Their music is a little bit of everything. The band members play a range of instruments including guitar, bass, drums, lap-steel guitar (tabla (Indian percussions), cajón (type of box drum), and more. Intriguing isn't is?

I caught them at the VooDoo Lounge in July and was blown away by their unique sound. The near-empty bar had a low turnout that Wednesday evening and I was shocked that people were missing out. However, one man's loss was this woman's gain and I had a great seat, which made for a more intimate performance. Click here to watch a video clip from that night's performance.

If you check out the band's Myspace page, you'll find covers better than the originals (i.e. Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" has nothing on Ish's cover).

"For Dionysus" is an Ish original. The compelling song celebrates some of the best things in life. The Greek god would be highly impressed. Ish's cover of "Indifference" by Pearl Jam is truly something special and worth checking out. The upbeat "Shoes and Coat" can be found on YouTube.

And now for my attempt to explain is:
Picture a huge pot of soup:
Throw in a dash of folk.
Add a punch of rock.
Stir in 3 teaspoons of smooth vocals.
Pour 1/3 cups of blues.
Sprinkle a 1/2 cup of chopped grunge.
Toss in a chunk of bluegrass.

Stir it. Boil it. Serve it.
Trust me. This soup is del-ISH-ous.

Not only do I recommend listening to them, but I also suggest seeing them live. Ish will be performing with Inca Silver and Northern Son at South Bay's Best of 2010 in San Jose on Friday, August 27 at 8pm. Tickets can be purchased in advance through Brown Paper Tickets.

CD Review: Northern Son - Wider Skies

End-of-the summer BBQs and Labor Day bashes are in the near future and you’ll need a soundtrack that captures the last few months: the good times by the pool with your pals, the unforgettable weekend camping trip you’re still a little embarrassed by, and the festivals. Oh those festivals.

The soundtrack I recommend for you? Wider Skies by San Jose rock band, Northern Son. These guys have a lot going for them these days -- frequent plays on Live 105, they rocked the local stage at BFD ’10, and they’re nominated for "Best Local Band" in Metro’s "Best of Silicon Valley". The band’s album was released nearly a year ago and continues to shine in my book and makes a great backdrop for some summer fun.

The catchy lyrics in "Fire" would make any sane person dance. "Little Mama" is a fun song about the attraction to a special lady; it has a a rockin' country twang to it and I like it. My favorite song on the album would have to be "Undertow," a captivating song about "getting caught in the undertow." "Love Will Find A Way" is another winner. It's filled with great vocals and I wouldn't be surprised if you've heard it on Live 105. Wider Skies exemplifies the band's talent and proves they're not easily classified. Their sound doesn't fit perfectly into a certain genre because they're comfortable (and great) at playing this mix of rock/alt/folk/pop/country.

Before heading back to school or just back to the reality that the summer is nearly over, play Wider Skies a few more times and reminisce of another fantastic summer in the South Bay.

Week 5 Review: Inverse

I first heard about Inverse three years ago when they came through San Jose with another touring band. I was able to put them on a show at The Blank Club, but it was a really off night and hardly anyone showed up. Since then, they've come through here a few more times and I've been working on getting them bigger and better shows to grow their NorCal fanbase. This time around they played Tres Gringos Baja Cantina on Thursday night and California's Great America on Friday, then headed to San Francisco to play Grant & Green on Saturday. I had the pleasure of seeing the first two shows and was once again highly impressed with this six-piece rock band from Temecula, California.

I see a lot of shows and it's not often that I find a band that just really sticks out. Inverse grabs your attention right away with their energetic, passionate, down-home rock-n-roll music that oozes sex. Their songs are beautifully composed with dynamic melodies and clever lyrics, plus catchy enough to make just about anyone an instant fan. Few classic rock-influenced bands have a sound modern enough to impact young listeners like Inverse does, so it's great to see the younger crowd get into their music. I was thrilled that they played their older songs “Do What You Want” and “Sweat My Love," though it was also wonderful to experience their new tracks "All American" and "Double Dealin Queen" live. As expected, their performance was dazzling -- I enjoy watching how each band member has a unique yet prominent stage presence that flows nicely with one another. Singer Trevor commands the audience's attention with guitarists Sal & Dom as his wing-men, plus Paul & Mike, on bass and keys respectively, add a smooth groovin' backbone with Topher's powerful drumming & percussion.

Having to fill 1.5 hours of music, Inverse played some old-and-new-school favorites, including hits by Lynyrd Skynyrd, Weezer, and Kings of Leon, creating quite a buzz inside Tres Gringos with patrons singing along happily. Ladies flocked to the stage encouraging some amusing banter between songs, from which a dance-off transpired during the band's cover of Michael Jackson's "Beat It." It's always enjoyable to watch contestants shakin' their asses trying to impress the band and audience! Inverse ended their set strongly with their devout hit “Father,” which I believe is their most powerful song that leaves an impact on listeners. I was happy to learn that the staff absolutely loved the band -- which led to many more drinks on the house and one drunk band!

Not only does Inverse have a Myspace ad campaign behind them, but they also signed a production deal with Mark Needham's company M.A.N. Entertainment; the producer that broke The Killers, Neon Trees, Iglu & Hartley, Metro Station, and many more. I really hope that having such a prominent figure in the music industry behind them will get them the stardom they deserve.

Music News: Rock Make Street Festival

The Bay Bridged, Cookie and the Dude, and Tartufi are pleased to announce the 3rd Annual Rock Make Street Festival will be held in San Francisco’s Mission District on Sunday, August 22, from 11am - 6pm! Best part about it -- it's FREE!

According the their website, the festival will be twice the size of last year, with three stages featuring all local and kids’ rock bands with over 100 arts and crafts vendors. This year there will be performances by Tartufi, AB & the Sea, Still Flyin’, Leopold and His Fiction, Social Studies, The California Honeydrops, Butterfly Bones, Sunbeam Rd., Sea of Bees, Jhameel, Billy and Dolly, Blue Rabbit, The Thrashers, The She’s, The Psychotherapists, and Wizard Lizard. Show Review: Band-Aide

On Monday Aug 2, I had the privilege of experiencing an amazing show put together by local film company Element 151 to raise money for the Summer Film Initiative. The show comprised of live performances by Bird By Bird, I Am Empire, Beta State, and Northern Son in the lovely San Jose Improv, and was hosted by Live 105's Menace.

The evening started with an incredible acoustic set by Jonathan Devoto (from Bird By Bird). Jonathan straight out owns the stage when he performs! In addition to be a phenomenal guitarist, he has so much charisma and vocal control that I was thoroughly impressed! It was also nice to see Tyler Florence (from Northern Son) join Jonathan on stage for two songs, especially doing backup vocals for "Let Go," probably one of my favorites by BxB. I recommend everyone to check out his video for this song!

Next up was I Am Empire, a solid San Jose band that recently signed to Tooth & Nail Records. IAE is a cross between bands like Brand New and The Used; high energy, guitar-heavy, in-your-face rock. Vocalist Austin Lions is an excellent front-man with expressive body language that really resonates with the audience. Joshua Brian Case stands out with great backup vocals and the whole band is fun to watch with the occasional synchronized guitar choreography. I especially enjoyed their songs "Dig You Out" and "Foxhole," as well as their banter about whether the brick wall behind them was real.

I was very curious about Beta State, having heard some of their songs online but never having seen them live. The band features Ryan and Adrian from Campbell darlings Strata, plus Justin on bass and Fresno-native Matt on vocals. As much as I hate being critical, I have to admit that their set started off a bit rocky. Matt had a few pitch problems and couldn't seem to keep power in his vocals in certain parts of the songs, though he improved greatly throughout the set as he got more comfortable on stage. I really enjoyed how well the songs flowed together and absolutely loved Ryan's ambient, Dredg-influenced guitar riffs. You can tell these guys are veterans in the local scene; all very skilled musicians. Best part was seeing Beta State finish their set strong with Matt hitting every note perfectly in their song "Stars," which may just be my favorite, though I really love "I'm Still Alive" as well. Towards the end of their set, singer Matt told us that his grandmother was in the hospital due to a stroke and apologized for being off. My heart goes out to him and his family and I truly hope his grandmother has a speedy recovery.

The night ended with an absolutely amazing set by San Jose favorites Northern Son. I know I work with these guys closely in booking and promotions, but I can honestly say they are an extremely talented band that I believe will go far. Their set started with a bang, playing their new radio single "Spin," which has been featured on Live 105's Soundcheck for a few months now. I love how all the band members integrate with each other on stage, looking like one fluid element. The audience really enjoyed Tyler's "slow and sexy" introduction of "Down In Virginia," a bluesy ballad that really shows off their softer side. I applaud their decision to have Jon Sontag join the band a few months back; he really adds a dynamic edge to their songs with the acoustic guitar and extra percussion. Knowing exactly how best to end this wonderful evening, Northern Son asked Jonathan Devoto and I Am Empire to join them on stage for a lovely rendition of "Love Will Find A Way." I'm pretty sure everyone there was blown away by this epic collaboration! For those of you that missed it, check out the live footage below, courtesy of Element 151.

Week 4 Review: The Devil Himself

As always, Santa-Cruz band The Devil Himself blew me away this past Saturday when they rocked X Sports Bar + Music Lounge at Homestead Lanes. After four years of booking this grungy hard rock band with metal undertones, I'm happy to say that they deliver each time, having perfected their signature sound. To witness their performance is an emotional roller coaster of musical sacrifice, with a raw, yet mature sound that penetrates the soul. It's likely you will face your demons as you get entrenched into their dark, intense sounds, with curdling screams that you can't get enough of.

I've always enjoyed watching bands that really encompass their music into their stage performance. Dave is an excellent front-main with big haunting eyes that are instrumental to his vocal delivery. Dan has one of the best guitar stances I've ever seen; he just jams out, low to the ground, with an unequaled sway. Then there's Shane on bass with his long flowing hair, headbanging in unison with Dan. Add master drummer Jason to the mix and it's the synchronized blend of visual and sound. The band was sweet enough to indulge my song request for "Zip It" -- I can't help but smile when Dave roars "I get down with my bad self." Take the journey to the underworld yourself with some of the devil's music next time they're in town!

Interview: Forrest Day

Since I didn't have a chance to interview Forrest Day at the All Shook Down Music Festival, he was nice enough to answer my five questions via email. I hope you enjoy his responses!

Q: Who would you want to collaborate with musically and why?
A: I would want to collaborate with so many people. One of em would be Jay-Z.

Q: If you had to choose one band/artist (dead or alive) to tour with, who would you choose?
A: I would wanna tour with Frank Sinatra! That would be an adventure, and he is my all-time favorite.

Q: From your life experiences (job, love, upbringing, travel, books, art, etc), what do you draw from the most for your musical creativity; what has influenced you the most?
A: I couldn't say what I draw from most when writing. Upbringing and love are big. Things that I can't let go of. I think it's about staying alert and paying attention, and identifying those crazy things that zoom through our minds.

Q: What are your top 5 favorite albums of all time?
A: Five of my favorite albums in no particular order:

Festival Review: All Shook Down

This past Sunday, Robin and I attended the All Shook Down Music Festival in San Francisco, presented by SF Weekly and Scion, and were thoroughly impressed with the diverse selection of entertainment and attendance rate. ASD showcased over 30 local, national, and international artists on an outdoor stage and in some of the intimate venues on Grant & Green streets in eclectic North Beach.

The festival started around noon, but we didn't arrive until 3:30pm, right at the end of Forrest Day's first set on the main stage. We got to enjoy the last few songs before we rushed into Maggie McGarry's to check out Mister Loveless. The venue was super crowded, and even though we only got to catch a glimpse of the band from the far left, I was stoked to experience the last two emotionally ridden songs of their high energy set. I now understand why this Walnut Creek band has been getting so much well-deserved attention!

Curious about Janelle Monáe, Sean "Diddy" Combs newest proclaimed diva, we headed to the main stage where a good size crowd had gathered. I'm sure it was quite a spectacle for the fans up front to see cloaked Monáe come on stage with her masked dancers; though from a distance, we could only see Monáe's pompadour standing tall and strong, bopping around as she danced on stage. There were times during her performance that her voice reminded me of Gwen Stefani (No Doubt), just with a more soulful edge, sentiments confirmed by other festival-goers near by. With a tasty "Shook Down Tea" in hand, I pondered on why there's always hula-hoops at festivals as I watched a group "hooping" -- modern dance using the hoop more as a prop.

After enjoying a slice of pizza from Golden Boy Pizza, we headed back to Maggie McGarry's to see what was next and found the all-girl trio Grass Widow crooning away. Since the tiny venue was unpleasantly packed full of patrons, we decided to see what else was going on. Much to our enjoyment, The Park was playing next door at Mojito's, and we instantly found ourselves in the dancing groove enjoying this sought-after rhythm band. Guest vocalist Siaira Shawn was amazing; her rendition of "Heartless" by far surpasses the original version by Kanye West.

Perusing through the food vendors, we discovered Mission Mini's, helping ourselves to a variety of their mini cupcakes. We listened to the experimental rock lullabies of Neon Indian as we nibbled on the tasty treats, though the crowd was dying down at this point and the wind really picked up. As the vendors were packing up and the streets started to clear, we headed to Steps of Rome for a some cappuccinos and prosecco as we eagerly anticipated Forrest Day's second set.

Once Forrest Day took the stage at Mojito's, the place was soaring! The energy of the music and the passion of the fans mixed into a rare aura of harmony and chaos that ignited the soul. If you haven't seen this band live, you MUST go to to their next show!! I was literally so blown away that I became that typical groupie right up front center stage, making eye contact with the band as I moved with the flow of the music. Guest rapper Dublin (of Shotgun Wedding Quintet) added that extra spice to Day's song "If You Do," turning it into the quintessential jam song of their set. The night ended when frontman Forrest Day passed out in mid-song, falling hard to the floor right between us! At first we weren't sure what happened, wondering if it was some theatrical part of the set, but when the band stopped and people rushed to his aid, it was obvious something had gone awry. After being doused with water, Day explained he was exhausted and over-heated (not surprising considering how hot it was in the club) and that they were taking a break to get some fresh air and recover. The crowd was supportive; people just kept dancing to the DJ music that took over. I doubt anyone was surprised when the band came back ten minutes later to pack up their gear without performing their scheduled 3rd set. The performance they gave left such an impact already I was truly satisfied and ready for my journey home to San Jose. Since I didn't get the opportunity to interview Forrest Day as planned, he was nice enough to answer my questions via email, so please check out the interview!

Week 3 Review: Left of Christ

Last Thursday I had the privilege of seeing Left of Christ at The Avalon, their first show back with original singer Ryan Reynoso after a year long hiatus. Let's just start this off by saying that their performance was solid and their new songs amazing! I definitely missed that mix of melodic and metal that sets this band apart from others in the local scene. I was also happy to see that the band hasn't lost its edge as so many do when they take a break, but instead they've grown even more, proving that they're back even stronger than before. It was obvious that the audience missed them too; the floor was packed with loyal fans, eager to soak up the new material and head-bang away!

I've always appreciated how well Left of Christ builds their songs with smooth transitions, heavy guitars, and a fabulous mix of melodic within the screaming vocals. Every band member is integral to the structure; it's a perfect blend of talent, artistry and stage presence that blows the audience away. The music is dynamic, their performance is enticing, and there's so much complexity in the songs that you just can't wait to see what they'll do next. Their delivery last week was top notch; everyone was buzzing about how amazing their set was and how they they stole the show from Adema! The credit is well-deserved -- this band is guaranteed to make lasting impressions whenever they take the stage! I know I'm excited to see these guys back in the circuit and can't wait for more shows, so hopefully they won't keep us longing for too long...

Video: Neon Trees - Animal (acoustic)

When I first heard "Animal" by Neon Trees on the radio, I was instantly hooked! The song is catchy, the singer obviously has some vocal skills, and I loved the sexual undertones of the lyrics. I was lucky enough to see Neon Trees opening for 30 Seconds To Mars back in May and I was mesmerized by their performance! Even though I didn't know any other songs, I found myself enjoying their whole set, humming along. Tyler Glenn is an amazing front-man; he just has this charisma about him and I just loved watching him strut around the stage. What made it even better for me was seeing that Elaine Bradley, the only girl in the band, not only did the backup vocals, but was also their drummer! For those of you that don't know me, I always wanted to play drums and never achieved my childhood dream, so I'm always fascinated by chicks on drums.

I recently came across a video of them performing an acoustic version of their hit single for Billboard, and I'm even more impressed! It's wonderful to see how talented this band is all stripped down -- I'm officially a dedicated fan!

Music News: West Coast Country Music Festival

The West Coast Country Music Festival & BBQ will be held Saturday July 31, from 12pm to 7pm, at Great Meadows at Fort Mason. The festival features live performances by Zac Brown Band, Ryan Bingham & The Dead Horses, The Band Perry, and Jerrod Niemann, plus there's a Barbeque Cook-off, Country Music Hall of Fame Exhibit, line dancing, and more! General admission is $45, but kids under 14 are free! This sounds like a lot of fun, so I'm encouraging my country-music-lovin' Dad to go and hopefully give me some feedback to post!

Video: The Limousines - Internet Killed The Video Star

I've been a fan of The Limousines since I first saw Eric Victorino and Giovanni Giusti open for Dredg in late 2008 and was stoked when their hit "Very Busy People" took over the airwaves in 2009. I will never forget the lyrics "that Donnie Darko DVD has been repeating for a week and we know every single word" -- mostly considering it's my favorite movie and I've actually had it on repeat so many times!

Last Friday, these local electro-pop heroes released the video for their single "Internet Killed The Video Star" and they're already up to 6,000 views in just 36 hours! Fans, including myself, are eagerly anticipating their upcoming debut album Get Sharp, releasing on July 27 via iTunes and Hot Topic. The video was directed by David Dutton and features some amazing zombie footage that won't disappoint.

Live: Ish @ the VooDoo Lounge

Last week I was lucky enough to watch ~Ish perform at the VooDoo Lounge in downtown San Jose. While it was one of the more quieter nights at the Lounge, those that did attend had front row seats (literally. A couple of fans sat on bar stools a few feet away from the stage).

I really enjoyed seeing these guys live and look forward to their next performance in San Jose, which is Fri Aug 27 at the Theatre on San Pedro Square.

Week 2 Review: Singer/Songwriter Kate Gaffney

On Tuesday night, in a little wine bar off Highway 1 in Pacifica, the newly opened A Grape in the Fog was celebrating Bastille Day with wine tasting and live music.

Kate Gaffney frequently plays with a full-piece band, but for this intimate show, the lucky crowd enjoyed a solo acoustic set by the talented singer-songwriter.

The summer has treated Kate well. She played at the Solstice Festival back in June and at the 20th annual High Sierra Music Festival earlier this month. Other notable artists at High Sierra this year included The Black Crowes, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Widespread Panic and Ozomatli.

Although a Philly native, Kate has embraced the Bay Area and can be seen playing throughout Northern California. Towards the end of the evening, Kate covered Old Crow Medicine Show’s “Wagon Wheel” and had a few in the audience singing along.

Music News: All Shook Down Music Festival

Today I came across the All Shook Down Music Festival, taking place on Sun July 25 in North Beach area of San Francisco, and produced by SF Weekly. The festival features a few bands/artists I would really love to see: Neon Indian, Janelle Monáe, Forrest Day, and Mister Loveless, plus 30+ other bands/artists!

It completely reminded me of Left Coast Live with it's similar format, and even features The Park, which just played LCL a few weeks back. It's nice to know that people are following in the footsteps of LCL; hopefully that means we are onto something good that will keep growing.

One thing that struck me about All Shook Down is that they are raising money for the For the Bayou charity, which is a grass-roots organization started in San Francisco by Louisianans in 2008 with a mission to restore and protect Louisiana’s wetlands and wildlife and to aid and assist in the humanitarian needs of its citizens in the event of a disaster. I like the idea of the $12 ticket price going to a good cause!

Random Thoughts: Low vs Diamond

One of my favorite albums in 2008-2009 was Low vs Diamond's debut self-titled album. I first heard their music in an episode of One Tree Hill [song "I'll Be" in episode 5.01] and was instantly hooked! I finally bought their CD in early 2009 and was really impressed with the whole album, reeled in by their hit singles "Heart Attack" and "Wasted" the most. When The Blank Club announced a Channel 104.9 "low-dough" show for $10.49 with LVD and Airborne Toxic Event, I had to go and see this newly discovered band (that I loved so much) live, plus it didn't hurt that I was already a fan of ATE's single "Somewhere Around Midnight". Not surprisingly, I was front-center stage for the whole show and blown away by both bands! The fact that I got to meet members of both bands after the show was just an extra added bonus. :-)

After that show, I immersed myself even more into their album, appreciating the rare treasures, especially "Actions Are Actions" and "This Is Your Life." Let's not forget the song that starts the musical journey, "Don't Forget Sister," which they saved last at the Blank Club show, making sure their drummer got some extra 'beating' time in with an extended intro that escalated the night into an adrenaline fever! Bet you didn't know this opening song on the album made Rolling Stones' 100 Best Songs of 2008 list at 59!

I've been eagerly awaiting news on when I get to enjoy a sophomore album from the band that stole my heart last year, and per their Twitter in January, they announced that "fans around the world must know that there are new and exciting things on the horizon for LVD in 2010 so please stay tuned!" Then in February, they posted "new songs, new theme, new photos, the new and improved Low vs Diamond will be unveiled shortly" on their Facebook. Considering it's July and their website still says "new site coming soon," though there are new graphics up, I'm getting impatient!! I can only hope that the waiting game ends soon....

Week 1 Review: Pounders

I first saw Pounders a year ago at the VooDoo Lounge and was instantly impressed! I had a feeling that this San Jose trio would come up quickly in the scene and a year later I can proudly say they have done an excellent job solidifying their pop-punk sound and exuberant stage presence.

Pounders just played my birthday show on July 2 at the Britannia Arms in Cupertino and they were in prime form! Singer/guitarist Chris Pounders has such a melodic twang in his vocals that give the songs a soothing bite, delivered with his boyish smile and curly mohawk that you can't help but adore. Chris has such amazing stage experience, which I'm sure helped him secure a role in Stomp Out Loud back in 2007. Justin Imamura, who's toured with Street Drum Corps, stands out on percussion; he's so much fun to watch with his powerful and energetic drumming style, that many have compared to Travis Barker (Blink-182/Transplants). It's evident after one song that Justin is an accomplished drummer; and I can't help but get sucked in watching him twirl his drumsticks as he bangs away relentlessly. Self-proclaimed "bass god" Alonso Hernandez is solid on bass and backing vocals, giving the band that hearty edge and extra personality with his expressive face that appropriately completes this fun-loving trio. Alonso is also known for living fast as "Bass Bandit" in local juggernauts Shadow Beat Ritual.

Not only does the audience find themselves singing along with the catchy melodies and lyrics of Pounders, they also get to enjoy some clever banter between songs from Chris and Alonso, as well as a unforgettable live performance that will make anyone an instant fan. Even my dad, an avid country music listener who rarely likes the bands I book, expressed how much he enjoyed Pounders when they were done with their set, much to my surprise and satisfaction!

Plus if you're looking for something to do tonight after Music in the Park, then check out Pounders playing their originals and some covers at Tres Gringos from 9pm to 10:30pm.

As a local Bay Area promoter and band manager, I felt the need to find a clever way to post about the lesser known and unsigned bands to get their name out there and increase their fanbase! I figured the best way to do this, without interrupting my already busy life too much, was to do write about one band a week since I go to at least one show a week. In addition, I also wanted to collaborate with a friend that I met through the Left Coast Live music festival, Robin Miller, a great writer that loves music and is into social media outreach, just like me! Hopefully this blog will get some notice and popularity in the process, which in my opinion just helps the local music scene and provide music lovers a place to come to discover great music! Enjoy!
